A photography perspective on this venue

The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater, MA is by far one of the region's top wedding destinations. They're top-shelf all the way. I've photographed over 100 weddings here since they opened, so I've had a LOT of time to see what works, what doesn't, and what makes a venue great. The Villa just gets weddings.

There are actually three different spaces here — the Madera, the Grand Ballroom, and the tent — and each one has its own personality. That's a big deal because you're not getting the exact same wedding experience regardless of the size or style of your wedding. I've shot in all of these spaces countless times, and every one of them has things I really like about it.

From a photography standpoint, this place is ridiculously easy to work in. There are great locations all over the property, the rooms are laid out in a way that makes sense, and I don't have to drag a couple all over creation just to find good light or an interesting background. The property gives me options, but they're all close and convenient. That's exactly what you want on a wedding day.

And honestly, that convenience matters. Weddings are already a whirlwind. You don't want your photographer disappearing with you for 45 minutes while everyone else is waiting around. At The Villa, I can move quickly, get you a ton of variety, and get you back to your wedding. The staff also knows how to run a wedding, which makes a huge difference in how smoothly everything flows.

After more than 100 weddings here, I can tell you that this isn't a venue that I just happen to like. I KNOW this venue. I know where the good light is, where I can take you for the killer portraits, how quickly I can move through family pictures, and how to get the most out of the property without making photography feel like the main event.

That's probably the biggest reason I rank The Villa so highly. It's beautiful, it's extremely well-run, and it works. It works for the couple, it works for the guests, and it works exceptionally well for photography. They're top-shelf all the way.

Ceremony

The main ceremony location at The Villa is out by the tent, and it's gorgeous. That's the default ceremony location, and for good reason. It's a beautiful setting and works really well for photography.
There is another ceremony location on the other side of the property that is honestly even more beautiful, but it's generally reserved for select weddings in the Madera Room. The reason they don't use it for everyone is actually pretty interesting: it interferes with the golf course, so The Villa has to essentially "buy" the tee time to make sure there isn't a golfer out there sending a golf ball toward your ceremony. That's an extra expense, so it's not something they do for every wedding.
But here's the thing about The Villa: even if your ceremony has to be indoors, you're not getting the dreaded "ah crap, it's raining" ceremony. The Madera and Grand Ballroom are both stunning spaces, and an indoor ceremony here still looks like a wedding. You're not settling for some ugly backup room because the weather didn't cooperate.
I actually had one wedding where we started the ceremony outside, and almost immediately after it began, it started raining. And I mean RAINING. Everyone rushed inside, and the staff had the ballroom completely flipped and ready for an indoor ceremony within minutes. I'm talking about maybe five minutes. It was absolutely incredible to watch.
That wedding is actually the only one where I've photographed the same bride walking down two different aisles on her wedding day. We got the outdoor ceremony, the rain came, and then we did it all over again inside. 😂
That's one of the things I really appreciate about The Villa. After shooting more than 100 weddings there, I've seen just about every possible scenario, and they know how to handle them. Things can change quickly on a wedding day, and they are extremely good at making the change without making the couple feel like everything has fallen apart.

What if it rains?

No worries. The rooms at The Villa — even the tent — are stunningly gorgeous and offer a ton for photography. This place was literally MADE for photography and weddings. They are constantly updating every inch of the property, and they never let a single piece get stale. Indoor, outdoor, it doesn't matter. It's going to be gorgeous no matter what.

Obviously, we'll want to dip outside at some point if at all possible to get some pictures in the gardens and among the flowers and shrubs. We are NOT allowed anywhere near the golf course, and I mean nowhere. It's almost like an obsession within the staff if you even think about getting close to it, so honestly, that part can be a little weird. 😂 I've worked here since they opened and have always gotten my shots, but yes, they definitely come across as restrictive about the golf course.

That said, if you're having your wedding in the tent, you actually have one of the best setups for getting outdoor-looking pictures even when it's raining. We can open the tent flaps, keep you completely inside and dry, and still use all of the beautiful landscaping outside as the backdrop. It's gorgeous.

Here's a little hack: if the tent isn't being used on your wedding day and it's raining, ask them if you can do some pictures in there. It's absolutely worth it. Of course, you need a photographer who knows how to light you properly in that situation. Otherwise, you'll end up silhouetted against the bright outdoor background. It requires off-camera flash.

Luckily, I've mastered that. 😉

Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter

No worries — this place is designed for great pictures year-round. They are meticulous about the grounds and landscaping, so there will always be great shots even in winter. The only time of year when it's not ideal is early spring, when there's nothing on the trees but also no snow. Then, honestly, just like any venue, it's going to look kinda empty outside with bare branches and dead grass. That's zero shade on the venue — they can't control that.
Otherwise, this venue is 100% top-shelf, best-in-the-region kind of venue, and I could not recommend them more — any time of year. I LOVE shooting at The Villa in East Bridgewater, MA.

The Dance Floor!

All three rooms — the Madera Room, the Grand Ballroom, and the tent — have plenty of dancing space, even when the rooms are somewhat packed with guests. They really don't have tables taking up the dance floor when you're at max capacity. The vibes always hit right.
It's also important to note that they're not really being told by neighbors to "keep it down" like some other venues, so you can party loud and hard right until the end. The dance floors aren't some designated, pieced-together fake floor, either. They're hardwood throughout the rooms, or concrete in the tent, so the dance floor is essentially scalable to whatever size you need.
It's a great vibe every time at The Villa in East Bridgewater!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater a great place to get married?

It's the best.  There, I said it.  They are top of the game, best in the region.  Food, staff, approach, it's all on point.  They know weddings and they do them as good or better than anyone.

2. Where are the best places for wedding photos at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater?

Just outside the tent area is a nice little garden area that offers a ton of variety for group as well as couples shots.  There are so many great spots here though.  Any direction you turn is another great picture opportunity.

3. What's the best time of day for portraits at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater?

Family and wedding party pictures would typically occur either immedaitely following "First Look" or direclty after the ceremony during cocktail hour unless you built in a gap between a church ceremony and arriving on property.

Regardless, at some point just before or near sunset I'll take just the two of you outside again for those soft-light intimate shots.  It should only take like 10 minutes but these are the shots you hire me for.  These are the jaw-dropping, tier enducing, OMG shots.

4. Is a first look a good idea at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater?

Absolutely!  The first look gives you a chance to truly see each other.  Express your thoughts.  BE together for a moment - away from everyone else.  Now you get to enjoy your own cocktail hour.  Now it's not such a whirlwind.  You're not as rushed, so less anxiety.  Totally worth considering.

For the traditional "I want to see her coming down the aisle", let me give some perspective.  First, when she gets there you need to just shut up and get married.  You can't stop and talk.  At a first look you can.  Second, that heart-fluttering HOLY CRAP feeling when all your guests stand and you realize this is real, this is happening!  That feeling doesn't go away just because you already saw each other.  It actually may be enhanced.

5. What happens if it rains on your wedding day at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater?

In all my years, I've only had maybe a handful of weddings that were 100% completely washed out.  It's so rare it's not worth discussing.  Yeah, maybe the ceremony gets moved indoors.  Maybe the family and wedding party pics are on the dance floor but there will almost certainly be an opportunity between drops to run outside for a few pics of the two of you.

I've seen them flip a room to ceremony setup in like 5 minutes.  I've had couples choose indoor instead of outdoor just for the look.  It's not a backup, it's an option.

6. How much time should we set aside for wedding photos?

I typically like an hour, but I'm SUPER efficient.  It really comes down to how large your group is.  How many in the wedding party?  How big is your family?  Are there divorces with step family?  Are there grandparents?  Do you want to include aunts, uncles, cousins?  The smaller the group the easier it is obviously.

The Villa very strict on their timeline and it's often not up to me.  They run a tight ship and will direct things.

7. Can we stay on schedule without feeling rushed?

This is my super power.  You could be WAY behind schedule, then it comes time for the family and wedding party pics and poof, you're back on schedule.  I can be amazingly efficient to power through all those combinations so you can lower the anxiety and not lose any of your wedding.

But, as I said before, the event staff guides the flow of timing and they will shut it down and pull you away if we take too long.  They're not very flexible with that part.

8. What's your favorite photo location at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater?

I like the sunset shot but you've got to know, sunset for The Villa isn't always sunset.  They'll tell us we need to go out 40 minutes BEFORE sunset because that's just the way it is.  ZERO flexiblity or understanding about the colors in the sky.  I'd have to break the rules and sneak you outside under the guise of a cigarette breatk to truly get an actual sunset picture.  Yes, it's that strict and they know it.

9. Have you photographed weddings at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater before?

More than I can count.  There's a benefit to knowing the flow of things.  Where you're allowed to go and where's off-limits.  Knowing where the shadows will fall and knowing what will be in bloom.  Even just knowing how the staff approaches the day and their personalities.  It all helps make the entire day run smoothly for you.  There's an unspoken "nod and wink" between me and the day-of coordinator keeping everything perfect so you get the most out of the day.

10. What should couples know before getting married at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater?

It's only perfect because they know how to make it perfect.  If you want your own spin on it, you'll feel a rub.  They're amazing, but very template driven.

11. How many guests does The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater work best for?

With three rooms you can get any size or vibe you want.

12. Is The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater good for indoor and outdoor weddings?

Yeah, I'd give them an A for indoor options.  They make it nice.  We'd want to dip outside if at all possible but they have variety and good indoor options.

13. Where do you usually take family photos?

Their gardens are gorgeous, easily accessible and offer a ton for wedding photos.

14. Is sunset really worth stepping away from the reception?

If it fits your timeline.  I'll push HARD to get it right, but they honestly don't give a damn about this and will take you out for "Sunset" way way way before the sun and setting and they just don't give a damn.  It's been that way for years and I've spoken with the owner even.  The timeline is more important than reality.  That's the ONLY shade I can cast on this venue though.  Literally every other aspect of it from start to finish is 100% top-shelf best in the region, so it's almost worth it.  I'll get the sunset shot - I always do.

15. What makes photographing weddings at The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater unique?

It's easy.  Anywhere you turn is a great shot.  I don't have to think.  From the couples perspective it's convenient.  HUGE bridal suite easily accessible all night, delicious food, it's just kinda perfect honestly.
