The sun sets opposite the water, behind the building and tent. You can't see the horizon from here, but that's actually not a bad thing. You get all the beautiful color in the sky with the building, tent and your entire wedding in the background of the shot. It's a really cool way to capture the atmosphere of the whole day rather than just another sunset-over-the-water picture.

White Cliffs is truly a one-of-a-kind wedding venue that has no equal in the region. It's perched high above Cape Cod Bay with an incredible vantage point, and its meticulously maintained gardens run right up to the edge of the cliffs. You have access to the beach below, there are flowers in every color throughout the gardens, and the gazebo looks like something out of a storybook. There are very few venues anywhere that can compete with this scenery—and you don't even have to cross the bridge.
There are a couple of things to know from a photographer's perspective. On a bright, sunny day, if we pose you with the water directly behind you, you're looking straight into the sun. So I'll usually angle you a little differently, which can actually give us a more interesting view of the Cape in the background.
If there were more indoor options for a rainy day, I'd give this venue a perfect 10. That's really the only significant limitation I see. The good news is that the tent keeps you dry, and we can open the flaps and position you right at the edge so the gardens and bay are still behind you. With the right lighting, it can look like you're standing outside without you getting wet. That's a pretty great solution.

There really isn't much in the way of indoor picture locations, so if you're hoping for a bunch of different indoor backdrops, this isn't the venue for that. But the floor-to-ceiling wall of windows makes a stunning backdrop for the dance floor and can also work beautifully for portraits.
The lighting inside is nice and even, and because the room faces east, you don't get the harsh direct sun or glare you might expect from all those windows. The tent has great light as well, especially when we can open the sides and bring the gardens and Cape Cod Bay into the background.

A photography perspective on this venue

I could not love this venue more. I actually almost got married here myself, but they didn't have our date. The grounds are perfect. Literally, I don't say that lightly. It's golf-course-quality grass that leads to flower beds with zero weeds, with plantings in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes right up to the cliffs overlooking Cape Cod Bay from about 120 feet above the beach. Couples have access to the beach for pictures via a tram or staircase (leg day—you'll feel it the next day).

White Cliffs has great staff, a delicious kitchen and plenty of menu options, plus the functionality of a tented dinner and indoor dance floor. Your guests can get out on the dance floor and really enjoy themselves, while others can step outside and catch up without having to compete with the music.

This is one of my top choices for venues in the area. As a photographer, it's got it all right there, and it makes my job super easy.

Ceremony

Show me a more beautiful outdoor ceremony site within a three-hour drive of Plymouth—I dare you. Seriously, it's stunning. The gardens overlooking Cape Cod Bay are White Cliffs' superpower. I've photographed a lot of wedding venues throughout New England, and I've yet to find another one that combines this kind of meticulously maintained garden setting with a dramatic ocean view like this. Nothing on Cape Cod, nothing in Newport. This is genuinely unique and special.
The sun lands on the ceremony site beautifully. If you're looking toward the gazebo, the sun is typically either directly behind you or just over your left shoulder. And because you're so high on the cliff, there's almost always a bit of a breeze, which can be a welcome thing on a warm summer wedding day. Guests are seated with their backs to the sun, so they're not squinting into harsh light, and they have an unobstructed view of the ceremony.

What if it rains?

I've photographed more than 20 weddings at White Cliffs Country Club in Plymouth, and I've never had a wedding rained out. White Cliffs is primarily a summer venue, and when rain does show up, it's often an afternoon cloudburst that passes quickly. Even those are relatively rare. An entire wedding day being washed out is simply not something I'd worry much about here.

And if it does rain? You can still get amazing pictures with the gardens and Cape Cod Bay behind you. Want to know my trick? I put you just inside the tent, open the flaps, and position all that scenery behind you. I light you with flash so you don't become silhouettes, and just like that, you've got beautiful photographs in the rain without getting a drop on you. Then, when the rain moves through later in the day, we'll head back outside for more pictures of the two of you anyway.

As for the ceremony, I've never personally seen one rained out at White Cliffs, so I don't want to pretend I know exactly what their current contingency plan is. My assumption is that they'd move the ceremony indoors onto the dance floor. Why? First, if there's thunder or the possibility of lightning, getting everyone inside makes much more sense than putting them under a tent. Second, the dance floor is a large, clear, open space where chairs can be arranged without having to completely reconfigure the reception setup in the tent. That's my assumption—not something I've had to test—and honestly, it seems like the logical solution.

Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter

White Cliffs is really a fair-weather venue—and I don't mean that as a criticism. The tent goes up in the spring and comes down in the fall, and while I suppose the indoor room could be used for a winter wedding, that's really a different type of wedding altogether.
The reason you choose White Cliffs is for the gardens, the views, the cliffs and that warm Cape breeze on a summer night under the stars. You're not coming here specifically for fall foliage, but you can absolutely get the atmosphere you're looking for in the spring, summer or fall. Their flower beds and gardens are seriously impressive.
And here's a little bonus: the beach doesn't really have a "season." Sand and water look pretty much the same whether it's June or November. So if we can get down to the beach, you can still get that classic coastal look at almost any time of year.

The Dance Floor!

The dance floor is pretty large and can definitely accommodate all your guests at the same time. The great thing is that those who don't want to dance can hang out in the tent and catch up without having to yell over the music. So you really get two great options for your guests—dance and party inside, or relax and socialize in the tent.

Regardless, at some point just before or near sunset I'll take just the two of you outside again for those soft-light, intimate shots. It should only take about 10 minutes, but these are the shots you hire me for. These are the jaw-dropping, tear-inducing, "OMG" shots.

Absolutely! A First Look gives you a chance to truly see each other, express your thoughts and BE together for a moment—away from everyone else. Now you get to enjoy your own cocktail hour. Now the day isn't such a whirlwind. You're not as rushed, which means less anxiety. Totally worth considering.

For the traditional "I want to see her coming down the aisle," let me give you some perspective. First, when she gets there, you need to just shut up and get married. You can't stop and talk. At a First Look, you can.

Second, that heart-fluttering HOLY CRAP feeling when all your guests stand and you realize, "This is real. This is happening!" doesn't go away just because you already saw each other. It may actually be enhanced.

5. What happens if it rains on your wedding day at White Cliffs Country Club in Plymouth MA?

In all my years photographing weddings, I've only had a handful that were 100% completely washed out. It's so rare that it's not something I'd spend much time worrying about.

Sure, the ceremony may get moved indoors. Family and wedding party pictures might happen on the dance floor. But there will almost certainly be opportunities between showers to get the two of you outside for pictures.

And that entire wall of windows looking toward the gardens can make a fantastic backdrop if it's pouring outside.

6. How much time should we set aside for wedding photos?

I typically like an hour, but I'm SUPER efficient. It really comes down to how large your group is. How many people are in the wedding party? How big is your family? Are there divorced parents and stepfamilies? Grandparents? Do you want to include aunts, uncles and cousins? The smaller the group, the easier it obviously is.

This is my super power. You could be WAY behind schedule, then it comes time for family and wedding party pictures and—poof—you're back on schedule. I can be amazingly efficient and power through all those combinations so you can lower the anxiety and not lose any of your wedding.

My advice? Relax, enjoy the day and let it be what it is. I'll make sure you get amazing pictures.

The gazebo out back is one of my favorites, especially when you incorporate the little bridge connector and fountain. It gives the pictures a really distinctive look that you aren't going to get at most wedding venues.

Absolutely. I've photographed more than 20 weddings here, and there's a real benefit to knowing the flow of the day. I know where you're allowed to go and what's off-limits, where the shadows will fall, what will be in bloom, and how the staff approaches the day.

There's even an unspoken "nod and wink" between me and the day-of coordinator that helps keep everything moving so you get the most out of the day.

It's surprisingly scalable. White Cliffs can work well for both smaller and larger weddings, although once you're getting up around 200+ guests, the space is going to feel considerably tighter. For most wedding sizes, I wouldn't consider capacity a major concern.

Absolutely. The indoor ceremony setup is beautiful. Obviously, the gardens are one of the property's biggest strengths, so we'll try to use them whenever possible, but I wouldn't look at an indoor ceremony here as some sort of consolation prize. The interior is really, really nice.

Usually just out back, off to the left of the patio, with the fountain and gazebo as the backdrop. It's gorgeous, it's unique, and it keeps the family pictures close to everything else happening during cocktail hour.

Yes. Absolutely. Not because you're going to get some giant sunset over the ocean—you won't. The sun sets behind the trees here.

But the soft light around that time of day is exactly what I want for those romantic, intimate photographs of the two of you. I promise, some of the pictures you love most will be made during that 10-minute window.

It's easy. Anywhere you turn is a great shot. I don't have to spend the day hunting for locations or figuring out how to make an uninspiring space look good—the good stuff is already there.

From the couple's perspective, it's convenient too. There's a HUGE bridal suite that's easily accessible all night, delicious food, beautiful grounds and a layout that just works.
